Soda is sodium carbonate and acts as a strong flux. It is mainly used for reduction glazes in gas or wood-fired kilns. Soda is a typical ingredient in carbon trap shino glazes and is responsible for their distinctive carbon-trapping effects.
In glaze recipes, it is also often referred to as soda ash.
When dissolved in water, soda forms a strongly alkaline and caustic solution.
