PY4 – Fine pyrite clay for exciting surface effects

The PY4 is a high-quality, grog-free stoneware clay, and has a very special character due to its natural pyrite content. Its fine grain structure makes it ideal for throwing at the potter’s wheel and also highly suitable for handbuilding, slab techniques, and the modeling of figures.

After firing, the PY4 has a beautiful sand-beige color. The small pyrite inclusions in the clay ensure interesting effects:

  • In oxidation firing, the inclusions are only subtly visible under a transparent glaze.
  • In reduction firing, the pyrite melts more intensely, which intensifies the effects.
  • The clay interacts vividly with the sodium vapors in a wood-fired salt kiln, causing exciting and uniquely textured surfaces.

Characteristics of the PY4:

  • Fine, grog-free stoneware clay
  • With natural pyrite content for special surface effects
  • Excellent for throwing and modeling
  • Highly suitable for oxidation, reduction, and salt firings
  • Firing color: sand-beige

Whether used traditionally on the potter’s wheel, for the handbuilding of objects, or for individual firing techniques – the pyrite content of the PY4 gives every ceramic work a fascinating, natural vibrancy.

The thermal expansion coefficient of PY4 is lower than that of other stoneware clays. We recommend testing glazes on PY4 beforehand and checking the results for hairline cracks.
